Grammar without Grammar,by Kenneth Dixon

Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are solely taught to students in order to better writing skills. Grammar deals with agreement of words, phrases and mainly ensures that sentences are composed correctly. Punctuation ensures that sentences flow and transitions from word-to-word occur in an effective manner. Spelling ensures that words are articulated and written correctly. The above are all components to have effective writing skills according to writer Deborah Dean, the author of the article “Grammar without Grammar: Just Playing Around, Writing”. Deborah Dean is a teacher, who encounters a negative reaction from her pupils’ parents when she follows the school district’s curriculum. The lessons given to her are to teach the identification of adverbs and verbs, as well as diagramming subjects and direct objects. Where Dean goes wrong is when begins teaching verbals with comic strips to a ninth grade honors class. A student’s parents sends a letter stating that his or her child is not learning how to write by doing meaningless exercises that were being administered. From that point on the curriculum is inherently dismantled. Dean, now starting on clean slate, needed to find a way to improve her students writing skills. She basically went back to drawing board. Having difficulties locating various ways to connect her lessons and vocabulary in an effective method to teach the students in her class, Dean spent years strategizing. Little did she know a book would help her improve teaching skills. The new method she learned was incorporated into Dean’s lessons in class and her students began to write. Using similar items and examples used in the book, Dean wrote an example of a sentence and explained to the students to write something similar to the example. The writing thus began and the students writing continued to develop. By teaching and incorporating fun into her lessons, students started enjoying writing. Lessons seemingly became understandable and more students participating. According to the article students generally wrote about things the new or did. Interactions the students had on a daily basis was the topic of the writing. That made it easier to write about for the students. From there the author discusses her discoveries of a wide variety of writings, in example magazines, books, novels, etc. The various writings strengthened Dean’s ideas of writing methods to teach to the students. Writing was becoming more interactive with the children; association of real life concepts and interactions broadened the students’ ideas for writing. Some of the readings included Sports Illustrated, the children’s book Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra by Andrea Davis Pinkney and Valiska Gregory’s Through the Mickle Woods. Good writing examples were used from these articles to aid in the pupil’s learning. The model sentences helped the students overtime in improving their writing. Although their writing was not always perfect, it was a start and a huge development from where the student’s skills began. The knowledge of grammar was finally in their heads from all the model sentences and examples that been given, whether they recognized it or not.

  1. This article is very significant in regards to parents and their children learning how to write effectively. In the artcle, the teacher is in attempt to teach her students how to write by using comic strips as a guide to show how to write effectively in a honors class. The parents were upset because they wanted their children to learn how to write correctly. The teacher ended up having to change her style and ways of teaching to help the children understand how to wite the correct way using proper grammar. This was a major case of using grammar without grammar because comic strips don't always use the appropriate usage of grammar. However, changing her teaching style helped the students to learn how to write correctly using the proper way of grammar.

  2. This is very significant to everyone who wants to write effectively. The teacher used a different technique when teaching these students. the teacher used a comic strip to teach the kids write effectively. the parents didn't like the way the teacher was teaching, so the way a teacher teaches can effect students and possibly even the parents of the students.

  3. This will attract people who have very good writing skills. The techniques that were used all seemed good for the most part. Even though the parents disagreed with the teacher's skills is all on the preference of the teacher.

  4. This article was interesting. This teacher, in my opinion was trying to include some instructional variety into her lesson plans by using a comic strip to appeal to the students. Certain parents did not see that it was an effective way of teaching this grammar material. The teacher did evaluate her teaching methods and altered them to please the parents of some students. I think that if this was my classroom, I would try to include both into my lesson. My way of teaching material and a more informative way to please certain parents.

  5. The teacher's way of teaching her students is a very clever and effective. Even though the parents failed to acknowledge her style in teaching, her results display positive results. The article was very interesting to read because quite a few teachers can learn from her example in inventing fun and new ways of learning grammar. There are a lot of students who are not motivated to learn, but if teachers were to make the subject interesting, it would help the students develop a sense of responsibility when it comes to their studies.

  6. It's always good when a teacher teaches his/her students in a way that is fun enough for them to engage in enabling their ability to learn more effectively. This type of stuff gives some students that needed motivation. I would teach my students in a fun and engaging way as well.It is ok to use different techniques in teaching rather than teaching by way of the district objective curriculum.

  7. The teachers use of comic book shows that it is important for the children to learn and who cares if they have fun while doing it. As a future teacher I would like to always have a way of grasping my syudents attention. This is motativating me to think outside the textbook box!

  8. Lets put it plain an simple, English grammar is not a fun or easy subject to learn, no ifs, ands, or buts. Yet, teachers as stated in the article are trying every possible variation of teaching grammar so students can better understand and in turn make them better writers. Methods that are off the main ideal set out for teachers are considered wrong by our society today for everyone wants to keep the same methods that were used years ago. But what those nay-sayers are not seeing is the vast oppertunities that are out there just waiting for a teacher to pick up so his/her students can better understand English grammar.

  9. For every young writer, the best way to get involved in writing is to do so about yourself. It is easier to adapt words to your own feeling, and then with time you will be able to create characters and adapt feeling you have felt to those people you are making. It is easier to understand your own feelings, than those of others. It is easy to understand that teachers need to adapt to these newer teachings. Students will care about writing more, and will learn vocabulary much easier as well. English can be a very fun topic to learn and understand, it just takes the correct care and understanding of a teacher. I had a bad experience when growing up in my grammar courses, it seemed that the majority of the work was given to me to keep me busy, and not to help me learn how to do it better. This is changing, and I love that.

  10. I really enjoyed this article because I want to teach English someday and I've considered how it may be hard to get my students to want to learn. Some of my favorite exercises I did in my English classes did the same things that this author did. My teacher would make the exercises fun and easily relatable. I think that teachers' should have more leeway when decided how to teach their curriculum.

  11. This article is very important to future teachers, as myself. I feel like lessons need to relate to students as much as possible. I do not understand the difference in using comic strips compared to Sports Illustrated. I feel like the parents were just basing judgments on what they thought their children should like. But incorporating students' interests into the lesson is definitely a plus. Students seem to become more engaged in learning.

  12. This article is great for teachers who need help getting their students involved. I think this is the best way for teachers to teach their students. I was taught like this in high school by some of my teachers.

  14. I thought this article was interesting. The teacher was clearly just trying to implement new ways of getting the students to want to learn. I think the assignments were legitimate even thought the parents couldn't see that. The parents obviously were more focused on the examples the teacher was using instead of what she was actually teaching. I think all teachers should find a way to relate the material they are teaching to topics that interest students.

  15. I really liked this article because I am going to be a teacher. I like the idea of using my student's personal interests into my lessons. I feel that it will get my students more interested in the material I am teaching. I do not think the parents should be upset by this because it gets their kids excited about learning.

  16. This article goes to show how an "average" teacher can become a good teacher with a little determination and hard work. If students are having fun and interacting within the lesson I think it helps them hold on to the information longer. I dont think it matters how unorthodox a lesson plan as long as students are learning.

  18. This article shows the methods of one teacher, whose goal was to find and exciting, interesting way to teach her students how to become better writers. She reads a book and it helps her become more effective teaching. I think the parent that called for the teacher to change her teaching methods as out of line. The teacher is qualified and if her methods help the students learn, they shouldn't be questioned. I personally believe that the teacher's method was effective because children tend to learn better when they are having fun.
