This article, by Alleen and Don Nilsen proposes an interesting idea of teaching English classes with a more humorous style. They argue that humor should be incorporated into teaching because it will allow for students to learn and appreciate the subject more, and give six arguments for the study of humor in English classes. The article uses a clever approach, by using a “Straw Man”, to acknowledge the six arguments. But Alleen and Don Nilsen make some good rebuttals against the arguments. And at the end of the article, the authors give a few good in-class lessons/activities for teachers to try with their classes.
The first argument against the use of humor in class is that kids already receive enough humor outside of school. Alleen and Don Nilsen make some good points against this statement though. In doing so, they state that by using subtle forms of humor in the class, students can, indeed, become more mature. In the article they mention such examples of humor as David Letterman’s “Top Ten” lists. Not all people are educated enough to know what some of the things Letterman talks about are, and that is what they want to teach more.
The next argument that the Straw Man makes is teaching humor will take away from time of teaching all other English courses. In response to this the authors mention that students will have more fun by incorporating humor into the study. Dangling modifiers are a good way to use humor because it helps students realize the obvious mistakes while learning why the mistake should be changed too. They go on to say that writing and speaking are easier when it comes to writing something humorous too, because it is generally something a student is more comfortable with talking about. Following this statement was a list of 10 different features that people tend to find to be most funny, which I am not going to get into.
The next argument made by the Straw Man brings to forth the idea that teachers are supposed to be preparing kids to earn a living. To respond to this, the Nilsens’ talk about a specific time in recent years when television comedies were at an all time high and were in need of script writers. Due to a lack of talent in the field though, made it hard for networks to find experienced writers. Least to say, there are many of jobs out there that allow for humor. People in all professions are capable of using humor. In many cases humor is said to relieve stress from a rather stressful job. Humor may help people get through the day easier.
After this the Straw Man argues that bringing humor into the class will create censorship problems, because people may bring up touchy subjects. The authors believe that humor of this nature should be taught effectively too though. By this they mean that humor should be taught with an appropriate and respectful mind set. Yet, it is possible to bring up rational topics and still be polite about it according to the two, and that is what they would like to teach.
This connects to the Straw Man’s next argument, that humor hurts people’s feelings. In response they state that humor is a communication tool that can build or tear someone apart. None the less, teaching humor is a good way to talk about cultural differences, as long as its portrayed in a good manner. It may not necessarily be alright for someone to make humor about a minority group, but if a person of that minority group pokes fun at themselves, then it may be seen as okay.
The final argument the Straw Man makes argues that humor cannot be taught if the person does not know how to tell a joke or write a funny letter. So in response the authors list several different ways to gather material (writing parodies, gathering news clips, using humorous icons, etc). Again, it is these ideas that the authors believe will make the classroom a more fun filled and encouraging way to learning. And I could not agree with them more. Making English fun and humorous makes it that much easier and more enjoyable to learn.
I think incorporating humor into English classes would be a great idea. Some of the best classes I had were with humorous teachers. Whoever it is that came up with the arguments against incorporating humor made good points but the authors came up with better counterarguments for these views. Students already complain about school enough as it is and by incorporating humor, they may be more apt to look forward to their classes if they are enjoying the class time.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things that teachers do to help students learn grammar that are boring. I find it hard to sometimes grasp some of the lessons because the sentences are dull or the way the topic is explained is just not attention-grabbing.Maybe if the teachers were a little bit funnier then class would not be such a bore, or even if the methods we were learning were incorporated into a game activity things could be easier to grasp.
ReplyDeleteTeachers always try to appeal to their students with any material that is presented. Lesson variety needs to be included to make lessons seem more catchy to students. Being a student, some classes do have a tendency to be boring. I think by incorporating humor into a lesson, it would make a lesson more interesting for students.
ReplyDeleteI feel that a teacher's personality can have some affect on how the students learn. For example, most students would find it hard to relate to a teacher if he/she spoke in a mono-toned way, have a lack of motivation, and generally just don't care about the students. However, if a teacher had a personality opposite that then the students would have a better chance of grasping the material taught. Even though teachers are responsible for helping the students learn, the students also have to be responsible for themselves. It is up to the students to actually study the material, do the homework, and bring home decent grades. There has to be a combination of both dedicated teachers and students who are willing to put his/her best foot forward in becoming successful at school.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that humor should be incorporated into grammar teachings. I think that humor is something that everyone needs to experience because it makes an individual happy. However, incorporating humor into grammar teachings would be an amazing thing to do because I think that students will be more intrigued and interested in the subject. Intertwining funny jokes or some type of laughter into grammar will also help students to remember the things that they learned about grammar by remembering their funny experiences when learning grammar. I think that teachers do have an affect on the way students learn because of the way that teachers teach the material, but I do believe that teachers should incorporate some humor in their teaching to not bore the students or make the subject matter not interesting.
ReplyDeleteI believe that humor is a very important element in a classroom. With out humor classes, including English class, is very boring. I feel that humor will enlighten a paper and bring it to life. I feel that it is important to teach humor correctly as well because as the article states there are those who do not know how to use humor in a correct form. Humor also provides the teacher with a form of variety in the classroom. Humor does have an enormous effect on how students learn and therefore, should be used in class.
ReplyDeleteHumor is very important while in a classroom, without it students would get bored easily. With the teacher teaching with humor it gives that teacher more to work with while teaching. Without humor classes would be boring and students wouldn't be as motivated as they would be if there was humor involved in the curriculum. Now say the teacher teaches with to much grammar the students will blow off the class, so teachers have to use equal amounts of seriousness, and humor to be effective in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think adding humor is a very good idea. It is also an important thing to have while teaching a class. More students will be paying attention and would want to learn because they are having fun. Most teachers are boring and students do not want to participate in class. Humor brings the best out of a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteHumor is a position as a hook and has been used to gain attention. I find myself more involved within a class period when the teacher strikes more of a lively discussion that a normal discussion. It is easy to understand why humor can be a negative thing as well. If you do not have a strategy to use the humor with, you will just be lacking material and intellectual stimulation.
ReplyDeleteI think adding humor to class discussion could be good if the student find your humor funny. If the teacher is the only one who finds his/her humor amusing then, it can be kind of an awkward moment for the teacher and the students as well.Looking at it from a positive point of view, Humor in the school environment can be good for teachers. It would be easier for them to teach to students and student will want to engage in the lesson plan more. They might even come out of their comfort zones and start asking questions.

ReplyDeleteTeachers that try to incorporate humor while teaching a lesson have to be careful. Being creative and using humor could help get students attention. Once the teacher has the classes attention they are more likely to remember what they are learning. However, it could also distract students and make them less focused on the material. If humor is used in a structured way it can be a postive learning tool.
ReplyDeleteI am indifferent on this topic of incorporating humor with grammar for a number of simple reason. For one grammar is a subject that I believe is dry and something that just has to be both taught and learned, so in saying that if you teach it with humor some students may not fully grasp the grammatical topic the teacher chooses to teach. Another reason why I am indifferent on this topic is the soley on teaching as a whole, so many teachers try to be funny when teaching yet they do not succeed. Humor is something not all people have grasped and I believe most teachers are in that category, therefore, humor should be used sparingly in both grammar classes and all other subjects.
ReplyDeleteI think there are several different things teachers can do to make grammar more interesting. Incorporating humor into the lessons is one. If students can relate to the messages of the teachers than they have a better chance of understanding the material.
ReplyDeleteIncluding humor into grammar sounds like fun. I don't believe that it would take away from learning at. Even though some parents might not agree it would be very helpful for students. Grammar can get very boring, humor would be away to keep students interested at all times. Humor shouldn't be the main focus but it can help a lot.
ReplyDeleteI think including humor in teaching grammar is a great idea that can have a positive impact on students. I think this is a good idea because students as a whole have short attention spans. The teacher using humor would keep the students attention, thus making them receive the material more effectively. I speak from experience because I have had teachers in the past that used humor while teaching and it proved to be effective.
