Should we teach grammar, or shouldn’t we?”
Often presented with this apparent all-or- nothing choice, even the teachers
asking the question may not have clear
instructional goals for teaching grammar;
they may simply think they should teach it.
Sometimes they have other reasons,
though, for thinking they ought to teach
grammar: they find parents, the public,
and even the politicians clamoring for
grammar instruction in the hope that
teaching traditional grammar from handbooks
or CDs will somehow improve
students writing, or at least their ability to
avoid “errors.”
Most often it doesn’t.
Yes, some students learn the conventions of grammar,
usage, and punctuation from a handbook. Or
at least they appear to have learned these conventions
when doing and drill exercises on one concept
at a time, followed by related tests. But do
students remember and apply these conventions
in their own writing? Here, the payoff severely
declines.
The problems with this common view of “why
teach grammar” lie deeper than most people realize.
First, we must contend with an underlying,
implicit, and largely erroneous learning theory: if
teachers teach something well, students will learn
it and, what’s more, will apply it well. What we
now know from cognitive psychology is that students
need guidance in developing concepts, such
as the concepts of “sentence” and “not sentence.”
In addition, no matter how motivated the students
may be to apply such concepts—for example, to
avoid or eliminate run-ons and fragments in their
writing—they still often need help applying these
concepts in practical situations. Such help may be
needed even by the students who enjoy and take
pride in their schoolwork and who love analyzing
data.
Much of what we teach in the name of grammar
amounts to labeling parts of speech and their
functions or identifying kinds of sentences, yet students
need very little of this to learn the conventions
of written edited English. For most students,
teaching grammar as sentence analysis is another
reason why the grammar doesn’t transfer to student
writing.
It is convenient for us to be able to refer to
“nouns,” “verbs,” “subjects,” and “predicates”
when talking about things like subject-verb agreement.
However, a little grammar goes a long way
when it comes to helping students edit for the use
of standard conventions in their writing, and the
concepts can be taught as we discuss literature and
the students’ own writing.
It is a very intense subject when the teaching and educating of our youth comes up in politics. Everyone knows that more should be done, and that teachers should be more strict, however it is almost impossible to change a nation set in its ways. There are schools that will always be a proper place to teach education, and there will be schools that do not meet a standard that we should have in place. It is good to go through every part of grammar education to develop a deeper understanding of communication, and by doing so, we can fix the mistakes of a past culture that has been defeated under the issue of education.
ReplyDeleteIf there is one subject in the United States school system that is not taught enough or at the level it should be it is English grammar. Grammar is something that needs to be taught no matter the level if teachers start out easy and work their way up into more complex grammar stages I believe that students writing would get better. But it is hard to change the mindset of America and what we have done for years and years yet, this is the time that something needs to be done and maybe CHANGE can be made to the school systems to put a larger emphasis on grammar. If you are going to speak English for the rest of your life why don't you learn the correct way to speak it and that starts in grade school, English classes.
ReplyDeleteGrammar needs to be taught mored rigorous its a lot of slick in the grammar department. Teachers need to reinforce grammar in a better way. English and grammar will be apart of a students life forever. As a country we need to work on making a better school system.
ReplyDeleteI think that grammar is something that needs to be taught in every grade, even when you get to college. Sometimes we as students learning new things everyday, seem o forget things that were taught to us years ago. We need to use proper grammar in life and we go to school to learn so therefore, grammar should be taught.
ReplyDeleteGrammar is something that should definitely be taught at all levels. Students get fairly basic grammar up until high school and then I feel like they are just expected to know correct grammar by that point. Grammar is very useful in a variety of levels and if a person speaks poor grammar it is often tied to low intelligence so why not just speak and write correctly in the first place?
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to grammar, I believe that grammar should be taught from grade school and in upper level courses such as high school and college. I think that grammar should be taught because grammar is the basic foundation of the English language.Grammar is helpful throughout life and will always be used, especially in the coporate world. Grammar is very important in jobs like public speaking, teaching, or even in general to show good manners. Understanding and being able to speak proper grammar will open a lot of opportunities too.
ReplyDeleteGrammar is something that is overlooked a lot, and really frowned upon. In most cases I didn't like it either, but as I got older I realize that is importance. Grammar is heavily correlated to writing skills, and being the writer that I am, I should posses these skills.
ReplyDeleteGrammar needs to be taught in every grade for students to get the knowledge they need for the future. BY not teaching students grammar, they are losing the structure of their whole life. With out grammar how will they be able to get a job, and need to be used almost everyday. Grammar needs to be taught to students so they can have a bright future and make it in the world.
ReplyDeleteGrammar in schools is a necessity. I believe that grammar and basic English skills need to be enforced at a young grade level. I think basic grammar skills need to start in first grade, with simple material. As a student advances through school, he or she should be challenged more with the coming grade levels. I believe that if students were consistently taught grammar in school, the English language would be a lot better then what it is today.
ReplyDeleteWriting skills have seemed to decline over the years. This article, I believe, is right on key. Teachers teach grammar rules and subject one at a time, so students are never applying what they learn in a complete paper or assignment. There might be a test over verbs or adjectives, but students do not know how to write a complete sentence or even a paragraph correctly. Even English or grammar books are set up this way. I do not know how to fix the problem, but something needs to be done to improve writing skills in schools.
ReplyDeleteGrammar is underated in a lot of schools in our country. I think grammar should be taught all the way through high school becasue I know from experiance that I forgot a lot of things about grammar after 8th grade. Things should be done to have grammar taught throughout high school.
ReplyDeleteGrammar is a necessity for students to learn. However, from my own experience I've had teachers that weren't very strict on grammar while grading papers. Even my English teacher admitted that he wasn't very confident in his own grammar skills. We would read grammar lessons out of the book. If he wasn't able to find and correct all of the mistakes in a paper how was I supposed to learn from my mistakes? Grammar is often a small part of an English class. I feel that grammar alone should be a class or be a bigger part of the English class.
ReplyDeleteI think grammar is very important. I think grammar should be taught at a young age. In today's society you have college grads who still dont know how to write correctly. Some managers and boss' dont know how to write effeciently. Grammar should not be taken lightly.
ReplyDeleteI think that grammar is very important and should be taught at an early age. I feel that not only should grammar usage be taught, it should be demonstrated so students know the application of the grammar rules. Just knowing the rules won't help much if the students don't know how to apply them correctly. So while teaching grammar is, in my opinion, of grave importance, teaching the application of the rules is just as important.
