Blog Summary 12: "What Makes Texting Distinctive"

Text slang to our youth seems to be new, but according to "What Makes Texting Distinctive", it has been around for nearly over a hundred years. The author starts the chapter off with informing the reader that six media commentators will be describe for a better understanding. Pictorgrams and logograms, these are the most noticeable of text orthography symbols, for instance we recognize" @" as "at", or "2" as "to". These are considered logograms according to the author. In logograms the punctuation is important not the visual. The author goes on to describe emotions (or smileys), where the meaning comes from the shape and symbols. In the chapter hieroglyphics are not compared to orthographics. The author defines rebus as representing pictures that are used for sounds of words instead of the object it refers to. Initialism is another form of a orthographic. It means the reduction of words. This is one of the second most noticeable feature of texting. Sometimes intialism is called acronyms. In most forms of texting people often use intialism for instance "GF" is for girlfriend or "W/E" is for weekend. Another form of texting people use but not as often as the other forms is "omitted letters", most of the time this is used when texters is to lazy to type out the entire word. An example would be "xlnt" which means excellent. Nonstandard spellings are misspelled on purpose for instance "luv" or "fone". Texting is a major factor in most people everyday life. These things are so common that people don't even realize they do it.

  2. Text messaging is cool and I actually love it but, it's not good for the overall language of English applied to writing and typing papers. With the slang or the short phrases used like ttyl or idk or gon and so on, I sometimes find myself typing a paper as if I'm texting without even noticing it until afterward. The reduction of words are used all the time in texting and that's something that is not that cool about texting because you do it without even realizing that it's actually wrong.

  3. Texting is a major factor in my communication as a young adult. I love texting more than talking on the telephone. Using slang allows my generation to be lazy and it can be make talking in a formal setting harder. Common ettiquette such as speaking correctly, can be compromised because of texting.

  4. I was surprised to learn that text slang has been around for over a hundred years. It is obviously a lot different now, they used to use symbols for language but I doubt they used words such as “LOL.” Texting slang is very common; almost everybody has a cell phone and uses text messaging. Text slang is okay when used informally such as texting a friend. However, some people become so used to the slang words it makes it harder for them to spell correctly while writing. Even though most slang words are common and easily translated some people have different meanings for their abbreviations and can cause confusion. For example some people may interpret “W/E” as weekend and some may think the sender is saying “whatever.” Texting is a very distinctive from proper English.

  5. I found this article very interesting. I had no idea that text slang has been around for over a hundred years. Everyone today uses texting, it is one of the major forms of communication. I personally find texting very convenient at times. Other times, I really dislike it. When I text I generally spell everything out and most people do not do that. I think texting, for most people, has had only negative effects on the English language.

  6. Who knew that text slang has been around for over a hundred years? For one, I did not know but in reading this article I learned just that and also that emotions have been used nearly as long if not longer. But other than that this article is self explanatory saying how texting has basically ruined the English language as a whole, because of the abbreviations people have made while texting. Although people may say how improper texting is the reality is texting will stay as a primary form of communication despite English critics and what they say.

  7. Texting is a leading factor of communication, many young adults are texting more and more now. Today texting is used more than actually talking on the phone. One bad thing about texting is that was use slang very often, and it can mess up our writing skills because we use those slang words so much it gets stuck in our head that those words are ok to say in a real conversation on in an email.

  8. I never knew that text slang has been around for 100 years! It is a little funny to think about. Sadly, this writing is all too popular now. I can say I'm guilty of it myself, and often find myself using this writing outside the texting world. I think that type of writing is alright though, as long as the writing is only being used in informal conversation, I see no wrong.

  9. I'm amazed that texting slang has been around for so long! here I am thinking that this type of communication was still relatively new when actually it is very old. Even though it is very popular, texting sort of takes away the proper use grammar skills of the English language. But everyone uses slang so it is part of our every day life.

  10. Text language is kind of ridiculous. Sometimes people are only allowed to send a certain number of characters in a text message so they shorten words, and that is understandable. But texting someone "n2m u" is dumb. It takes two seconds longer to actually type "not too much, you?". I was surprised when reading this though that texting slang has been around for as long as it has. I don't feel like there's anything wrong with texting but it's really not that difficult to text proper grammar as well, especially since it is as widespread as it is.

  12. I cannot believe that text slang has been around for almost one hundred years. Shortening of words is very common among teenagers when texting such as "Cya" for see you. Also, by using symbols to express feelings, it is shorter than writing out the word like sad using :(. Text slang plays a common role in my everyday vocabulary, but using it while writing a paper is simply unprofessional. I catch myself once in a while typing certain words such as wat for what or kno for know. I believe that text slang is used more commonly than correct grammar. Recognition of the amount of time that this has been around should make people aware that each generation has had this idea and it is not a new concept.

  13. For the most part, I believe texting has had negative affects on society. A vast quantity of people use slang in every text he or she sends. This causes an influence and reflection in actual writing an individual engages in on a regular basis. People find may find themselves writing during formal occasions in a slang and text form, which in turn would be inappropriate.

  14. I agree that it has been around for a long time. I think that our grammar has become so broken, that it is just a joke to pretend like we have an understanding of proper grammar. Our youth have been taught to be lazy, and this is how we react to our teaching. We no use slang for speed, although it is not necessarily a bad thing, it is laziness.

  15. I was very surprised to find out that the texting slang has been around for a really long time. I was under the assumption that texting lingo is newer because cell phones are relatively new. I think texting is good for communicating with people but it is terrible for our grammar. It teaches us not to care about the grammar we use and that texting slang is appropriate to use.

  17. I agree with the author in what makes texting distinctive. I think the language of texting, when analyzed is very interesting. The history lends to the intrigue, as well as the many different facets of the language. I think that texting can have a negative impact on grammar because I have experienced it myself. Sometimes when writing papers I will inadvertently use texting language out of habit.
