A Systematic Approach to Grammar Instruction,
by Sonya Clark
The teacher in this article had one goal in mind, and it was to improve her students writing skills. She searched endlessly to provide the students with the help they needed. So, she started a two year grammar sequence program. The program started when the students were in the seventh grade and continued until the end of their eighth grade year. Each month the students covered a new topic and reviewed previous material. I was amazed at how the teacher used all the stages in the learning cycle, explain, extend, evaluate, explore, and engage. She made her students incorporate what they had learned into their own writing. Also, she allowed them to edit their peers writing, so they would become better at recognizing simple mistakes that are made. The teacher always provided the students with practice material, mainly from her own writing. At the end of the program, the teacher evaluated the students progress. One student told the teacher how she was able to apply what she had learned and was able to fix the mistakes she made in the past. If I was a teacher or was interested in teaching, I would follow the model this teacher provided because it explains and give details on how to help students improve their writing!
I think that the model provided by the teacher was great because it was successful in improving her students writing. She used the stages of the learning cycle in her lesson and that's also good because it covers all of the stages that are needed to teach someone and have them actually learn from it.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is great and more teachers should follow this example. I like how thorough the teacher is and how much she cares about her students' ability to write correctly.
ReplyDeleteIn this article, the teacher's goal was to help the students improve their writing skills. Having good writing skills is essential in today's society. The teacher uses different techniques to help the students improve and become better writers.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the teachers approach to grammar. By spending one month on a certain topic allows the student to become 100% comfortable with the content being taught. Also the review at the beginning of each month would also be very beneficial. I also liked that the teacher used all of the stages of the learning cycle.
ReplyDeleteI thought the teachers approach to grammar was exceptional. It showed that the teacher wanted each to student to become exceptional writers by allowing them to spend a month on each topic. I also like the the fact that the teachers used all the elements in the learning cycle.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher was efficient in teaching the students how to write properly. Her style to teach the students grabbed their attention. That means that teacher reached her goal and the students are now better writers.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good idea. I found that it was amazing that the teacher could create a program for her students. A lot of the time, teachers are not supported to form their own curriculum. It is great that her students could focus on and improve their writing skills. Students today need to be able to write with enthusiasm and correctness.
ReplyDeleteI like how the teacher used examples when she was teaching her students how to write properly. I believe teachers always need to try and figure out new and exciting ways to teach their students. The more interesting the examples the more likely a student will remember.
ReplyDeleteI think that this was a very good idea. It's amazing how common basic mistakes are made(even at the college level). My freshman year here, we had to proof read our peers papers. It was ridiculous how many of the students till didn't know how to set up a five paragraph paper. There need to be more steps like this offered at a lower grade level so students can practice basic writing skills.
ReplyDeleteI like the teachers efforts in this article. She provided her students with the resources they needed to become better writers, and even put forth the effort to come up with her own examples to accommodate to her students needs. It not only helps to have a creative lesson for the students but to have lessons that the students can relate to always helps. This is proven in this article.
ReplyDeleteMore teachers should learn from this example. I'm not saying that teachers do not do a great job, but some really need to consider all of the teaching techniques presented in this article. I like that this teacher is so concerned about her students' writing. The way she presented her material made it interesting for the students to learn.
ReplyDeleteThe willingness to accept that you do not have an exact understanding of something, is the willingness to be wise. I believe this teacher rooted deep into her understanding to help others who did not understand as well. She was able to aid these children through an adaptive lesson planning that would let them gain an understanding. She did this through the E method. Explain, Extend, Evaluate, Explore, and Engage. The most important to me, was the ability to engage the people.
ReplyDeleteI like what the teacher did in this article. More teachers should follow her teaching styles so students will learn at a young age how to use good grammar. Not only is it a intresting way to learn but students will be able to use what they learned from the class in everyday writing.
ReplyDeleteI believe that more teachers should take this model of teaching grammar and use it in classrooms across the country. Within my middle school and high school the teachers taught grammar straight out of books not extending to sources that students could easily relate to. Grammar should be learned and then perfected at a young age and that transition between middle school and high school is the perfect place for such a model of teaching grammar. If teachers put forth more of an effort to teach, I believe students will follow.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion teachers should use this learning cycle because it is a better learning tool that helps the students develop better grammar skills. I feel that students would have better grammar skills if the teachers would closely examine both their strengths and weaknesses.
ReplyDeleteI think it was a great idea for the teacher to use this learning cycle. It seemed to helped her students learn and apply the correct rules to writing. It would make a big difference if all teachers were creative and put that much effort into helping their students learn.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher made a great decision by choosing the learning cycle for her classroom. The students really adapt to the concept and even seemed to enjoy it. When teachers are really interested in helping the students it really makes a big difference. Most students cant learn from a boring teacher. The learning cycle covered some important things that some teachers often forget about. I wish I had a teacher like that when I were younger.
ReplyDeleteThe teaching methods that were used were effective because the allowed students to interact with there learning, and gain hands on experience. With ideas being reiterated in children's minds, concepts can be learned and effectively used. The cycle allows students time to develop and hone in on their skills.
ReplyDeleteI believe this is a great idea, this teachers strategy toward the grammar lesson was awesome. This shows that the teacher wants all of the students to do well, by giving them alot of time. it is great to see that teachers are teaching these students with suck enthusiasm and i hope it continues to many other class around the world.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this article. I'm majoring in Education and reading about successful teaching methods is always nice. The teacher's method seemed to be very beneficial to the students and worked effectively. It was a simply method but really pushed the material so that the students were better able to understand. Since the students were given so much time to really study what was being taught, they seem to have been more able to let the information sink in.
ReplyDeleteI think that the model provided in this article is effective because it allows students room for growth. I also think it is a good idea for students to edit their peers writting because it gives the students editing a sense of where they stand as writters.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this article and I think the teacher's approach to helping her students become better writers is extremely effective. Her methods are helpful for the students because she not only teaches them terms and rules, she requires them to practice using them in their own writing. In addition to teaching them rules, she shows her students how to make their writing more vibrant and interesting. Another effective aspect of her approach is how she reviews the material after the summer. I know from experience that this can be effective. Over the summer, I don't think everything is forgotten, it just isn't as sharp because in most cases the methods aren't being practiced. by reviewing them, it refreshes the students' and then they are able to pick up right where they left off.
