Blog 29: The English Patient

The article by Richard Hudson and John Walmsley discusses grammar in the 20th century. The authors try to determine what caused the decline of grammar. They conclude that one of the factors in the demise of teaching grammar in schools was the lack of research on English grammar. The article claims that for several decades up to about 2000, most state schools in England taught little or no grammar, and it is still normal for students to know virtually nothing about grammar upon leaving school.

The authors believe that grammar children should learn grammar for several reason. To expand their grammatical compentence, to underpin this competence in performance, to support foreign-language learning, to develop their thinking skills, to develop their investigation skills, and to develop a critical response to some of the ways in which language is used in their everyday environment.

In recent efforts, grammar awareness has gained momentum. Governments have recongnized the problem with grammar and tried to counter-attack it in their best way. The government in England has implemented new regulations for teachers, in-service training. In-service training has been more realistic at least in the sense that it recognises the extent of the problem. A man by the name of Carter led a large scale project called Language in the National Curriculum. Its main achievement was probably to establish, in the teaching community, the general principle that explicit knowledge about language, including grammar, is in fact relevant and important for English teaching.

  1. I agree with the authors, children should learn grammar to expand their grammatical competence. Lacking knowledge of grammar causes students to not only be unable to write correctly but, it also enables them to speak in a proper manner grammatically. I also agree with Carter and his National Curriculum project.Grammar in my opinion, is very relevant and important for English because how can a teacher teach English correctly and properly without applying grammar in his or her lesson plan?

  2. For this particular article, I stand in agreement with the authors. My reasoning for this is because I believe that children should be taught proper grammar as a way of enhancing grammatical skill and knowledge. I think if children aren't taught proper grammar they'll lack good writing skills and have poor speaking skills, as far as putting the right words together to make a proper statement. Being taught good grammar will also enable children as they grow older opportunities for things such as good jobs. Grammar plays a huge role in society. I also stand in agreement with Carter and the National Cirriculum project because it is very imperative that instructors teach children the proper ways to use grammatical skill. Grammar is fairly relevant to English because they intertwine in the field of have good public speaking skill and knowledge of word usage. Overall, I think that children should be taught the proper way of using grammatical skill.

  3. It is very important for children to learn grammar. I think it should be taught as early as possible. It wouldn't be such a challenge for people later in life if they went through school being graded on their grammar in every subject. Grammar skills are a necessity because we often communicate especially in the business world through letters or emails. It is important for people to understand exactly what you are trying to say in your message. It is important that teachers of all subjects feel confident in their own grammar skills so they can correct students. For example is a student in a history class writes a paper, they should be corrected on grammar errors. The teacher may not take off points if the paper isn't for an English or grammar class but students should still be corrected. Overall, I think it is very important that effort to teach grammar continues to increase.

  4. This article really hits home in today's society. Students need to learn grammar and why it is important for everyone's life. Using proper grammar will get you far in life, it helps you develop your vocabulary and speak in a professional manner. This definitely needs to be applied to the newer generation because, there are many people who are seriously lacking in grammar profeciency skills. Slang is the norm for all of us, which is fine, but there is a time and a place for that.

  5. For children, learning grammar is very important. A child should be introduced to grammar at an early age so that the skills they learn will keep growing and growing. It is important for this to be applied to the future generations as soon as possible, because being taught good grammar will also enable children as they grow older opportunities for things such as good jobs. Grammar is very important and teachers needs to continue teaching grammar the right way so we all can can have this great skill.

  6. Grammar is always a major factor in a child development. Using correct grammar can be a major factor in passing to the next grade. Over in England I don't understand how grammar wasn't viewed as important. The new generation is getting lazy with technology but no matter what people should always teach grammar to children.

  7. I agree with the author. Grammar is definitely something that should be taught to children and I find it strange that England wouldn't have taught it and emphasized it as much in the past. I feel like, with technology, people are becoming less and less interested in speaking and learning proper grammar but overall it is very important and everyone should have the opportunity to learn it.

  8. Grammar is something that should be taught to children, starting at an early age. Good grammar skills are diminishing from existence. Proper grammar is very important, perhaps if taught at an early age on a regular basis, grammar skills of individuals of all ages would be much better than they currently are.

  9. I agree with the authors of this article in that grammar teaching shouldn't be abandoned. I believe it is very important and should be implemented at and early age. I believe that grammar is especially important when a person enters the professional world. While communicating with other professional people, it is very important to demonstrate an understanding of grammar and its usage.

  10. The authors of this article bring up a very good topic that most just want to shy away from. Yet, grammar is not taught enough to students from the grade school level all the way to the college level courses. If we are taught grammar at an early age then we would be better suited for our latter years of education. As both of the authors stated there are steps being taken to increase the knowledge about grammar in educational settings.
