Dialect Boundaries

In the article,"Folk Linguistic Perceptions and the Mapping of Dialect Boundaries" by Erica J. Benson she talks about the mapping of dialect boundaries in the United States. Since the United States tradition has been based solely on production data that it's approach neglects a rich data source toward language varieties. There has been investigations in the state of Ohio about folk perceptions of boundaries and their relationship to production boundaries. Ohio is a diverse area and a linguistically complex region. There are many diffrent types of dialect mixtures that appear in Ohio. Benson then goes on and talks about diffrent boundries around the United States. Perceptual dialectology is a necessary component of traditional dialectology studies that map dialect boundaries of language variation studies. What did you guys think of the article?

  1. I am always excited to go to new places in America because of the vast differences in dialect and overall behavior. One thing that sets America off from being like any other country is its increase in foreign immigrants into our country. We are based off of the fact that we are all from different places. The dialectic boundaries in America will definitely show a diverse group even within each state. There can sometimes be multiple different style of English, and also foreign languages within each state in America. This is a very cool thing for me to see.

  2. I agree with Kaleb Cook. America as a whole has different dialect. Since America is known as "the land of opportunity", many people with different behaviors and dialect come over as immigrants. There is a very diverse language or dialect here in the United States of America. As far as boundaries, im certain that there are several dialect boundaries, and I find it pretty cool to experience different dialect spoken.

  3. America is a land that is composed of several different dialects. It is interesting to visit different areas of the United States, just to hear the different dialects that exist. It is even present in Southern Illinois, there are a wide variety of dialects here in our area.

  4. Being in such a diverse country it isnt hard at all to see different dialects and even behavior. But around the world it's a lot more to see when it comes to languages and dialect. So often it can be the same language just spoke different among different groups of people.

  5. America has many dialects, when you visit different parts of the USA u can tell very clearly the variety of dialects within our country. Even within states there is a difference, me having from being the suburbs of chicago, i can tell that there is a difference whit the locals from around here. It is great that there is many dialects because i feel it makes that part of the country different and unique.

  6. The United States of America is different from all other countries and cultures because we are a combination of numerous cultures intertwined. Dialect from different languages are clear not only within our country but within our own school here as SIU. The dialects range from those students who reside from Chicago area to those in southern Illinois, with a much larger range to those who range from other states. But there is a reason why America is considered the best nation, and one of those reasons is the ablity to keep your own dialect.

  7. All around the country there are different ways in which people speak. I feel that these differences are what make our nation stand out from all the others. Because of this, we share and adopt a lot of thoughts and ideas that help us relate to other cultures. Each state in America has a different amount of languages and accents that can be easily identified by other people.

  8. The United States of America definitely has a massive diversity of cultures. Even within different states people’s dialect is very different. People use different words for things and pronounce their words differently. I think it's interesting but at the same time can cause confusion. I have recently been exposed to more and more diverse dialect since I started school here at SIUC. It’s crazy to me how many different languages and accents I hear while walking across campus.

  10. The differences between people is in rare form in this reading and it shows how there are similarities and differences between various methods of learning. While the U.S is not the most knowledgeable in some fields we still remain a major factor in nations.

  11. Being at a university that is diverse, there are many different dialects being spoken here. Due to people coming to America from all over the world speaking different languages and then picking up on the English language, that is how one is able to tell the different dialects. America has many different dialects because of this.

  12. This idea is great!! The United States is such a diverse region, but many Americans believe that everyone that lives in America speaks English. I think this would be beneficial in the classroom, because it would teach students the common language spoken in each region. This would open their eyes to the concept of diversity more. In Southern Illinois there are not as many different languages spoken, so this would enhance students' learning about the country.

  14. I agree with some of my classmates about the diversity of dialect in the U.S. The U.S. has long been viewed as a "melting pot" of cultures and nationalities. This leads to the diverse nature of dialect in the country.
